What is deworming for cats?

Deworming is the process of removing internal parasites, such as worms, from a cat's body. Cats can get infected with several types of worms such as roundworms, hookworms, tapeworms, and whipworms. Common symptoms of worms in cats include diarrhea, vomiting, weight loss, and a swollen belly.

Deworming medication is available in different forms, such as pills, liquid, and topical treatments. The medication works by either paralyzing or killing the worms, which are then expelled from the cat's body through feces.

Kittens should be dewormed starting from two weeks of age, and every few weeks thereafter until they are twelve weeks old. Adult cats should be dewormed at least once per year, but the frequency may vary depending on their lifestyle, health, and environment.

It is important to consult with a veterinarian before administering any deworming medication to your cat, to ensure that the medication is safe and effective. Additionally, following good hygiene practices such as regular litter box cleaning and washing hands after handling cats can help prevent the spread of worms.
